In addition to starting and stopping practice and qualifying sessions and races, the starter is a flag station responsible for the section of track from the starters bridge to the next flag station. The starter must judge whether the cars are lined up properly before waving the green flag to start a race and must keep track of the leader to know at whom to wave the checker flag.
